The Right to Fly - Preview:

A book passionately defending balloon flight for human beings, celebrating the 175th anniversary of The London Library. The first balloon flight with passengers (a sheep, a duck, and a rooster) took place on 19th September 1783. On 4th October 1863, Nadar's giant balloon "Le Géant" had its first ascent; the second (and nearly fatal) was two weeks later. A curiosity both for its content on theories of flight and its author, an important pioneer of French photography and skilled self-publicist, The Right to Fly indicates the interest taken by many at the time in the possibilities of human flight - and the Victorian passion for discoveries and invention. The books in "Found on the Shelves" have been chosen to give a fascinating insight into the treasures that can be found while browsing in The London Library. Now celebrating its 175th anniversary, with over seventeen miles of shelving and more than a million books, The London Library has become an unrivalled archive of the modes, manners and thoughts of each generation which has helped to form it. From essays on dieting in the 1860s to instructions for gentlewomen on trout-fishing, from advice on the ill health caused by the "modern" craze of bicycling to travelogues from Norway, they are as readable and relevant today as they were more than a century ago..

Born to Fly - Bill Reid Preview:

The thrilling and entertaining lives of New Zealand's helicopter dynasty. Three generations of Reids have flown helicopters. It's in their blood. First there was John, a World War Two fighter pilot. After the war he used helicopters for things no one dreamed possible, carrying out 300 rescue missions and training a generation of Kiwi pilots along the way. Next there was John's son Bill, who began flying in the early 1970s, during the dangerous venison recovery and live capture years. Over the course of his 40-year career, Bill flew helicopters for almost every kind of job you can imagine, from mountain rescue to Hollywood location scouting. He's since restored an Avro Anson Mk I reconnaissance bomber, used in World War Two and the only airworthy craft of its type left in the world. And finally there's Toby and his wife Rachael, whose helicopter business continues the legacy of 60 trailblazing years in helicopter aviation. Adventure, enterprise and courage . Born to Fly tells you how the Reids have it in bucketloads..

Means of Transportation and Registration of Nationality - Vincent P. Cogliati-Bantz Preview:

This book examines the concept of nationality of means of transportation in terms of jurisdiction in international law. It reassesses the definition of nationality and explores how it is conferred. The book first places nationality in the broader perspective of jurisdiction in international law, and examines the historical development and necessity of the nationality of means of transportation. It goes on to investigate whether and under which conditions international organizations may confer a ‘nationality’ on means of transportation, examining the law of the sea conventions and air and space treaties. The book finally explores several questions relating to international registration of means of transportation, building a regime of international registration. Vincent Cogliati-Bantz introduces a necessary distinction between transport internationally registered and transport registered in a State but fulfilling a mission for an international organization. As a work that proposes the ability for international organisations to access international spaces without reliance on State-registered means of transport, this book will be of great use and interest to scholars and students of public international law, international organisations, and maritime, space, and aviation law..

The Nationality of Ships - Herman Meyers Preview:

It gives me great pleasure to introduce this work by Dr. H. Meyers. The problem of "The Nationality of Ships" has long been one of the most difficult problems in the international law of the sea. It has been made more acute recently by the growth of "flags of convenience". Legally, the problem has been complicated or simplified-according to one's point of view-by the emergence of the concept of the "genuine link" associated with the Judgment of the International Court of Justice in the Nottebohm case (second phase) in 1955. Other develop ments have included the thorough preparatory work of the Internation al Law Commission leading up to the United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea, held in Geneva in 1958; the debates at that Con ference and particularly its adoption of the Convention on the High Seas; and finally the Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice in the case concerning the Constitution of the Maritime Safety Committee of the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organisation in 1960. All these developments have thrown light on the problem ofthe allocation of ships to one or other of the politically organised territorial communities (or States) of which the present international society is largely composed. But an agreed solution acceptable to all the interests concerned seems as far away as ever. The question of ships operated by international institutions such as the United Nations is another problem which awaits a satisfactory answer..

No Freedom without Regulation - Joseph William Singer Preview:

Almost everyone who follows politics or economics agrees on one thing: more regulation means less freedom. Joseph William Singer, one of the world’s most respected experts on property law, explains why this understanding of regulation is simply wrong. While analysts as ideologically divided as Alan Greenspan and Joseph Stiglitz have framed regulatory questions as a matter of governments versus markets, Singer reminds us of what we’ve willfully forgotten: government is not inherently opposed to free markets or private property, but is, in fact, necessary to their very existence. Singer uses the recent subprime crisis to demonstrate: Regulation’s essential importance for freedom and democracy Why consumer protection laws are a basic pillar of economic freedom How private property rests on a regulatory infrastructure Why liberals and conservatives actually agree on these relationships far more than they disagree This concise volume is essential reading for policy makers, philosophers, political theorists, economists, and financial professionals on both sides of the aisle..

Property and Community - Gregory S. Alexander,Eduardo M. Penalver Preview:

Property and Community fills a major gap in the legal literature on property and its relationship to community. The essays included differ from past discussions, including those provided by law-and-economics, by providing richer accounts of community. By and large, prior discussions by property theorists treat communities as agglomerations of individuals and eschew substantive accounts of justice, favoring what Charles Taylor has called "procedural" conceptions. These perspectives on ownership obscure the possibility that the "community" might have a moral status that differs from neighboring owners or from non-owning individuals. This book examines a variety of social practices that implicate community in its relationship to property. These practices range from more obvious property-based communities like Israeli kibbutzim to surprising examples such as queues. Aspects of law and community in relationship to legal and social institutions both inside and outside of the United States are discussed. Alexander and Peñalver seek to mediate the distance between abstract theory and mundane features of daily life to provide a rich, textured treatment of the relationship between law and community. Instead of defining community in abstractly theoretical terms, they approach the subject through the lens of concrete institutions and social practices. In doing so, they not only enrich our empirical understanding of the relationship between property and community but also provide important insights into the concept of community itself..

International Arbitration and the Permanent Court of Arbitration - Manuel Indlekofer Preview:

The modern tendency to restrict international arbitration to matters of commerce and investment is succumbing to a renewed recognition of the original impetus for dispute resolution by arbitration – i.e., matters of public international law, most importantly the settlement of disputes that pose a threat of international conflict. Recent developments suggest a renaissance of public international arbitration, most clearly manifested in the present flourishing of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), the oldest existing dispute settlement institution in international law. As the calls for the development of new and more appropriate methods for dispute settlement in international law increased during the 1990s, the PCA undertook a structural reform and is today a vital forum for dispute settlement, with scores of arbitrations currently pending under its auspices. This book – the most comprehensive study of the institution to date, covering its history, its present status, and its future prospects – proves the PCA’s contemporary relevance within the international dispute settlement framework. Among aspects of the PCA’s work covered are the following: how public international arbitration functions in comparison to other means available for dispute settlement in international law; the PCA’s historical contributions to the current dispute settlement framework; arbitrations between a state and a non-state actor that are in whole or in part governed by public international law; the fields in which public international arbitration plays a revived role; the PCA’s present-day institutional framework and its current activities; the prospects for public international arbitration and the PCA in the dispute settlement framework of the twenty-first century; and proposals to increase the PCA’s activities in future and to sustain and enhance the institution’s ongoing revitalization. A very useful Practitioner’s Guide provides an overview of the PCA’s various services and the best means of accessing them, along with a summary of the key provisions of the new PCA Arbitration Rules 2012. For lawyers who are involved in dispute resolution proceedings, there can be little doubt about the PCA’s relevance. This book is at once an academic work, indispensable for scholars of the institution, and a practical guide that will be a required addition to the libraries of counsel, arbitrators, and others involved in dispute resolution proceedings conducted at the PCA..

All aspects of the detailed requirements of IFRS are dealt with on a topic-by-topic basis. Each chapter of International GAAP® 2017 deals with a key area of IFRS and has a common structure for ease of use: an introduction to the background issues; an explanation of relevant principles; a clear exposition of the requirements of IFRS; a discussion of the implications in practice and possible alternative solutions available; worked examples; extracts from real company accounts; a full listing of the required disclosures. “... an important part to play in the process of promoting consistent, comparable and high quality financial reporting under IFRSs ... a book that not only provides an analysis of the requirements of the standards and the principles that they expound, but also presents a unique explanation of how the standards should be interpreted and applied in practice.” - the Chairman of Trustees of the IASC Foundation “A standard reference work” - Financial Times “The definitive guide to financial reporting” - The Times.

One of the essential adjuncts to the principle of freedom of the seas is that a ship must fly the flag of a single State and that it is subject to the jurisdiction of that State. About the book: Ind AS transition has resulted in high-quality, principles-based, globally comparable financial reporting of large Indian companies. The transition not only impacted the financial results of companies, but also caused far reaching consequential business impact. Since last two years, there have been several changes in Ind AS for example, amendments in the revenue recognition standard and new leases standard has drastically changed the performance reporting in the balance sheet composition of companies. Further, certain Ind AS principles are implicitly complex, for example, the accounting for financial instruments, acquisitions and business combinations are quite nuanced and can get difficult to apply without proper understanding. Towards this end, this book attempts to provide insights and in-depth analysis on interpretative issues and complex principles in the Ind AS standards. Ind AS contains extensive presentation and disclosure requirements. The relevant chapters extensively deal with these requirements with illustrative examples. To simplify the reading experience, the chapters include a brief, easy to understand, summary of the relevant standard, followed by Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on the chapter. Coronavirus (COVID-19) has also resulted in widespread economic uncertainty and disruption of businesses. There have been far reaching implications on financial reporting. These circumstances would potentially present entities with several challenges when preparing their financial statements. This Edition covers some of the key financial reporting implications by way of FAQs in related chapters that companies need to consider along with the possible approaches that they may consider to dealing with the same keeping in view the business objectives, financial covenants and the accounting standards. This book is intended to help the companies to identify Ind AS requirements that are relevant to them and evaluate various accounting policy choices available under Ind AS. The disclosure related issues would be useful to benchmark with the Ind AS/IFRS disclosures of major companies. Currently, there is limited literature of the Ind AS application issues. This book endeavors to provide guidance on these issues. The book would be an immensely useful referencer for professionals, practitioners and corporates..

Fundamentals of Airline Marketing - Scott Ambrose,Blaise Waguespack Preview:

Applying fundamentals of marketing to commercial passenger air transportation, this textbook puts the emphasis on marketing principles and illustrative ways in which airlines can distinguish themselves within the highly competitive global marketplace. Fundamentals of Airline Marketing begins with a survey of current airline business strategies and the macro forces that have shaped the airline industry in the past and will continue to do so in the future. The growing importance of technology is discussed both from the perspective of better understanding customer needs and engaging more effectively with them. The central role of the "customer" is explored through the lens of modern segmentation and branding approaches. Coverage then shifts to the tactical decision areas consisting of the 4Ps—product, place, promotion, and price—in which marketers shape and execute their strategies. The book concludes with a focus on executing marketing initiatives internally through customer-facing employee groups and externally through the measurement and management of the customer experience. Fundamentals of Airline Marketing: • is an accessible textbook on the fundamentals of marketing for commercial passenger air transportation; • chronicles the marketing innovations and controversies that have been central to the historic shift in airline fortunes; • demonstrates how airline decisions fit within the fundamentals of marketing and how the marketplace is continuing to evolve; • provides a bridge between key marketing principles and their specific application to the airline industry in each chapter. This textbook is written primarily for undergraduate college students enrolled in aviation business administration programs and related courses. It will also serve as an accessible primer on airline marketing for industry professionals not presently working in marketing and for frontline airline employees seeking to learn more about marketing..

Trade Competitiveness of the Middle East and North Africa - Jos R. L pez-C lix,Peter Walkenhorst,Ndiam Diop Preview:

Over the past decade, four major developments in global economic integration have shaped trade policy and the economic performance of countries within the Middle East and North Africa region: the emergence of global supply chains, the growth of trade in services, the rise of China and India as major international trading powers, and regional integration. These developments, along with the labor and natural resource endowments of particular countries (some are resource-poor but labor-abundant, some resource-rich and labor-abundant, and some resource-rich and labor-importing), have influenced export diversification outcomes across the region. Yet these countries may not be taking full advantage of all of the opportunities the four new trends offer to them. 'Trade Competitiveness of the Middle East and North Africa: Policies for Export Diversification' examines the region's trade policy agendas and their results by focusing on the countries' response to these four key developments in international trade. As the region recovers from the global financial and economic crises, the book identifies reforms that could allow countries to further strengthen global production networks, benefit more from trade in services, better compete in external markets to face the rise of China and India, and reach the full potential of regional integration. If thoroughly implemented, especially by oil exporters, all of these reforms could help boost growth and job creation in the region..

Will Sustainability Fly? - Walter J. Palmer Preview:

While international negotiations to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have been less than satisfactory, there is a presumption that a significant level of multi-lateral commitment will be realized at some point. International air and marine travel have been left to one side in past talks because the pursuit of agreement proceeds on the basis of commitment by sovereign nations and the effects of these specific commercial activities are, by their nature, difficult to corral and assign to specific national jurisdictions. However, air travel is increasing and, unless something is done, emissions from this segment of our world economy will form a progressively larger percentage of the total, especially as emissions fall in other activities. This book focuses on fuel. The aim is to provide background in technical and policy terms, from the broadest reliable sources of information available, for the necessary discourse on society's reaction to the evolving aviation emissions profile. It considers what policy has been, why and how commercial air travel is committed to its current liquid fuel, how that fuel can be made without using fossil-source materials, and the barriers to change. It also advances some elements of policy remedies that make sense in providing an environmentally and economically sound way forward in a context that comprehends a more complete vision of sustainability than 'renewable fuels' traditionally have. The goal of Will Sustainability Fly? is to broaden and contextualize the knowledge resource available to academics, policy makers, air industry leaders and stakeholders, and interested members of the public..

This book covers wreck law as an integrated whole, going beyond the question of "removal" to include issues such as the ownership of wreck and how the law deals with the many commercial law problems arising after ships have been wrecked during the maritime commercial adventure. The book offers authoritative guidance on the genesis and meaning of the Nairobi Wreck Removal Convention 2007, and the interpretation of its often-complex provisions as they apply both to States trying to use its powers and to shipowners and liability insurers faced by its obligations. The authors explain the increasingly complex inter-relationship between linked areas of maritime law, including salvage, intervention and the overlapping international regimes which deal with pollution from oil, bunkers or hazardous and noxious substances. The book examines how a salvage operation transitions to wreck removal and links the liability provisions with the standard form international commercial contracts actually used by the industry to remove wrecks, eg BIMCO’s Wreckstage 2010, Wreckhire 2010 and Wreckfixed 2010. It also covers the complex requirements concerning the disposal of wrecks, including the latest recycling regulations applicable in 2019. The Law of Wreck will be of value to shipping industry professionals, insurers and legal practitioners, as well as academics and students of maritime law..

Since Britain's occupation of Cyprus in 1878 and the fall of the Ottoman Empire after the First World War, ethnic rivalry has dominated the island's divided history. This comprehensive collection of documentary evidence and archival sources offers an enlightening insight into the troubled political conflict of the island and seeks to illuminate the contested debate. "The Cyprus Issue" brings together material which scrutinises relations between Cyprus and Europe over the last twenty years, exploring the impact of international and constitutional law on the dispute. Paying particular attention to judgements delivered by the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights, this volume sets out the legal and political documents which inform the discourse on the subject. The Interception of Vessels on the High Seas - Efthymios Papastavridis Preview:

The principal aim of this book is to address the international legal questions arising from the 'right of visit on the high seas' in the twenty-first century. This right is considered the most significant exception to the fundamental principle of the freedom of the high seas (the freedom, in peacetime, to remain free of interference by ships of another flag). It is this freedom that has been challenged by a recent significant increase in interceptions to counter the threats of international terrorism and WMD proliferation, or to suppress transnational organised crime at sea, particularly the trafficking of narcotics and smuggling of migrants. The author questions whether the principle of non-interference has been so significantly curtailed as to have lost its relevance in the contemporary legal order of the oceans. The book begins with an historical and theoretical examination of the framework underlying interception. This historical survey informs the remainder of the work, which then looks at the legal framework of the right of visit, contemporary challenges to the traditional right, interference on the high seas for the maintenance of international peace and security, interferences to maintain the 'bon usage' of the oceans (navigation and fishing), piracy j'ure gentium'and current counter-piracy operations off the coast of Somalia, the problems posed by illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing, interdiction operations to counter drug and people trafficking, and recent interception operations in the Mediterranean Sea organised by FRONTEX..

Evolution of International Aviation - Dawna L. Rhoades Preview:

The purpose of this book is twofold. First, it lays out the forces that shaped the international aviation industry and that changed all the rules in the drive for liberalization. Second, it looks at the many interesting and difficult choices ahead that the airline industry in general and the international aviation industry in particular face. These choices include many dichotomies: pulling back from the trend toward liberalization or embracing the liberalization trend, merging in search of profitability or fragmenting the industry in search of economies. These possible futures are explored including the pros and cons of each future from a national, consumer, employer, and employee perspective. As with the previous two editions, Evolution of International Aviation reviews the historical development of the international aviation system. From this foundation it then provides an updated and expanded account of the current state of the aviation and aerospace industry including profitability, consolidation, and merger activity. New to this edition, the book broadens the coverage of the industry segments - airlines, air cargo, and manufacturing - to include the emerging commercial space sector. It also emphasizes the relationship between aviation and the political process, exploring the sustainability of this mode of transportation in a world of climate change, high oil prices, and political instability. Because this book is intended for both the interested amateur and the more serious student, references are provided in the text and at the end of each chapter to allow for further in-depth study. The third edition also adds to each chapter a set of learning objectives and a concluding series of questions for discussion..
