Javis and Simon were two previous adventures now combined into this book about their organization called the Untouchables. This group is dedicated to opposing crime but with a difference: it recognizes no laws. Named after the caste in India who perform dirty and dangerous jobs, the actions of the Untouchables are often illegal and lethal. Only one man, Mother Hen, knows the true identity of his agents, and, as outlaws, their only protection is their anonymity which they protect with disguises and false identities, enabling them to disappear after a mission like the "ghosts" they are called..

This richly suggestive book challenges many of our fundamental assumptions about ourselves and our world."—Mark C. Taylor, New York Times Book Review "Dazzling analysis. . . . The book is firm and convincing once you appreciate its central point, which is that in traditional Hindu thought the dream isn't an accident or byway of experience, but rather the locus of epistemology. In its willful confusion of categories, its teasing readiness to blur the line between the imagined and the real, the dream actually embodies the whole problem of knowledge. . . . The book’s primary character is William (Will) Farrell. The book begins with eleven-year-old William lusting after his friend Nick’s sister, Sylphie McMillan. A bit later, William sheds a tear as he watches his precious Sylphie drive away with a sleek dude from California. Nick and Will play football together in high school. As an adult, Will reflects on how he meets his wife, lovely Lorna, after a silly accident on the ski slopes. Lorna’s father doesn’t care for Will, especially after Will gets drunk and rides a calf up and down both aisles of their church service. So the couple elope and birth two lovely daughters. After college, William rises to chief engineer at DataComp Inc., and Lorna rises as chief fashion designer at Fashions International. Lorna basks in in the glamor of the fashion world and local society while Will just takes pride in being a competent engineer and program manager. At one point, Will passes a golden new business opportunity to his well-trained business subordinate. Lorna hears of this “passing the buck” by her husband, and considering his lack of interest in rising in the world of society, she proposes that they separate as a first step to divorce and suggests that both of them feel free to date others. Finally, after Will wrestles (and deflates) the huge inflatable dragon at DataComp’s entrance, Court, the company owner, tells Will to vanish for an indeterminate sabbatical. Will then heads off to Bermuda where he plays rugby, deep fishes, and reunites with Sylphie—who has changed her name to a movie actress named Margaret/Maggie Wainwright. The two of them love and battle through a tempestuous relationship before Maggie finally departs Will and Bermuda. Whilst in Bermuda, Will revives his old passion for painting and writing and struggles with a “Portrait of Lorna.” Meanwhile, Lorna begins to tire of the social frenzy and begins to reflect on the many reasons why she had loved her separated hubby, William, for those many years. Realizing that she still loves him, she flies off to Bermuda. (Meanwhile, whilst on the beach, William finally manages to paint a magnificent painting of his first and only love, Lorna). At the end, Lorna scales down the rocks to a secluded beach and discovers William sound asleep in front of the “Portrait of Lorna.” She quietly bends over and kisses William in his sleep. And they hug and kiss and unite in a solemn pact to stay together—forever..

Kastur Kapadia was betrothed to the mighty Mahatma Gandhi, father of modern India, when they were both just seven years old. The couple married when they were thirteen and Kastur had five children, the first of whom was born when she was sixteen. Though Gandhi's name has become synonymous with asceticism, this biography reveals that he enjoyed a sensuous, loving relationship with Kastur. Daughter of Midnight is the result of a lifetime of research by Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma and Kastur. As well as recounting historical events behind the birth of a nation, Daughter of Midnight is also a love story, which ended with the terrible tragedy of Gandhi's assassination by a Hindu extremist in New Delhi in 1948. Though Gandhi's strength and resolution defeated all the resources of the British Empire he was not always confident, the author reveals. When the young Gandhi, as a barrister in Bombay, could not open his mouth for fear during his first ever court case, Kastur consoled him and soothed the humiliation he felt at being laughed at by his contemporaries. The woman who shared Gandhi's sorrows, his triumphs and his tragedies also knew the flaws and human frailities of the great leader. Together Mahatma and Kastur laid the foundations for the movement of nonviolence to which they devoted their lives. When Mahatma was imprisoned, Kastur was often jailed with him. No obstacle was too great for this extraordinary woman who gave up a life of wealth for one of utter poverty. When Kastur died the whole nation wept for the woman the people called simply 'Ba'...Mother..

The new definitive history of gangster-era Chicago–a landmark work that is as riveting as a thriller A CHICAGO PUBLIC LIBRARY BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR “An extraordinary achievement. The writing is riveting, the research impeccable.” —Sara Paretsky “Gripping. ... Reads like a novel.” —Chicago magazine “Revolutionizes our understanding of Al Capone and Eliot Ness." —Matthew Pearl Includes 115 photographs and a map of gangland Chicago. In 1929, thirty-year-old gangster Al Capone ruled both Chicago's underworld and its corrupt government. To a public who scorned Prohibition, "Scarface" became a local hero and national celebrity. But after the brutal St. Valentine's Day Massacre transformed Capone into "Public Enemy Number One," the federal government found an unlikely new hero in a twenty-seven-year-old Prohibition agent named Eliot Ness. Chosen to head the legendary law enforcement team known as "The Untouchables," Ness set his sights on crippling Capone's criminal empire. Today, no underworld figure is more iconic than Al Capone and no lawman as renowned as Eliot Ness. Yet in 2016 the Chicago Tribune wrote, "Al Capone still awaits the biographer who can fully untangle, and balance, the complexities of his life," while revisionist historians have continued to misrepresent Ness and his remarkable career. Enter Max Allan Collins and A. Brad Schwartz, a unique and vibrant writing team combining the narrative skill of a master novelist with the scholarly rigor of a trained historian. Collins is the New York Times bestselling author of the gangster classic Road to Perdition. Schwartz is a rising-star historian whose work anticipated the fake-news phenomenon. Scarface and the Untouchable draws upon decades of primary source research—including the personal papers of Ness and his associates, newly released federal files, and long-forgotten crime magazines containing interviews with the gangsters and G-men themselves. Collins and Schwartz have recaptured a bygone bullet-ridden era while uncovering the previously unrevealed truth behind Scarface's downfall. Together they have crafted the definitive work on Capone, Ness, and the battle for Chicago..

It is quite possibly the most striking work of non-fiction set in India since Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo, and heralds the arrival of a formidable new writer." —The Economist The stunning true story of an untouchable family who become teachers, and one, a poet and revolutionary Like one in six people in India, Sujatha Gidla was born an untouchable. While most untouchables are illiterate, her family was educated by Canadian missionaries in the 1930s, making it possible for Gidla to attend elite schools and move to America at the age of twenty-six. It was only then that she saw how extraordinary—and yet how typical—her family history truly was. Her mother, Manjula, and uncles Satyam and Carey were born in the last days of British colonial rule. They grew up in a world marked by poverty and injustice, but also full of possibility. In the slums where they lived, everyone had a political side, and rallies, agitations, and arrests were commonplace. The Independence movement promised freedom. Yet for untouchables and other poor and working people, little changed. Satyam, the eldest, switched allegiance to the Communist Party. Gidla recounts his incredible transformation from student and labor organizer to famous poet and founder of a left-wing guerrilla movement. And Gidla charts her mother’s battles with caste and women’s oppression. Page by page, Gidla takes us into a complicated, close-knit family as they desperately strive for a decent life and a more just society. A moving portrait of love, hardship, and struggle, Ants Among Elephants is also that rare thing: a personal history of modern India told from the bottom up..

Taking full advantage of the dramatic details of the protests and conflicts that helped shape the nation, politically, socially, and economically, Ramachandra Guha writes of the factors and processes that have kept the country together, and kept it democratic, defying the numerous prophets of doom. Moving between history and biography, this story provides fresh insights into the lives and public careers of those legendary and long-serving Prime Ministers, Jawaharlal Nehru and his daughter, Indira Gandhi. Guha includes vivid sketches of the major “provincial” leaders, but also writes with feeling and sensitivity about lesser-known Indians—peasants, tribals, women, workers, and Untouchables. Massively researched and elegantly written, this is the work of a major scholar at the height of his powers, a brilliant and definitive history of what is possibly the most important, occasionally the most exasperating, and certainly the most interesting country in the world..

Have Gun—Will Travel - Gaylyn Studlar Preview:

One of the most successful series of its time, Have Gun—Will Travel became a cultural phenomenon in the late 1950s and made its star, Richard Boone, a nationwide celebrity. The series offered viewers an unusual hero in the mysterious, Shakespeare-spouting gunfighter known only as “Paladin” and garnered a loyal fan base, including a large female following. In Have Gun—Will Travel, film scholar Gaylyn Studlar draws on a remarkably wide range of episodes from the series’ six seasons to show its sophisticated experimentation with many established conventions of the Western. Studlar begins by exploring how the series made the television Western sexy, speaking to mid-twentieth century anxieties and aspirations in the sexual realm through its “dandy” protagonist and more liberal expectations of female sexuality. She also explores the show’s interest in a variety of historical issues and contemporaneous concerns—including differing notions of justice and the meaning of racial and cultural difference in an era marked by the civil rights movement. Through a production history of Have Gun—Will Travel, Studlar provides insight into the television industry of the late 1950s and early 1960s, showing how, in this transition period in which programming was moving from sponsor to network control, the series’ star exercised controversial influence on his show’s aesthetics. Because Have Gun—Will Travel was both so popular and so different from its predecessors and rivals, it presents a unique opportunity to examine what pleasures and challenges television Westerns could offer their audiences. Fans of the show as well as scholars of TV history and the Western genre will enjoy this insightful volume..

Great Soul - Joseph Lelyveld Preview:

A highly original, stirring book on Mahatma Gandhi that deepens our sense of his achievements and disappointments—his success in seizing India’s imagination and shaping its independence struggle as a mass movement, his recognition late in life that few of his followers paid more than lip service to his ambitious goals of social justice for the country’s minorities, outcasts, and rural poor. Pulitzer Prize–winner Joseph Lelyveld shows in vivid, unmatched detail how Gandhi’s sense of mission, social values, and philosophy of nonviolent resistance were shaped on another subcontinent—during two decades in South Africa—and then tested by an India that quickly learned to revere him as a Mahatma, or “Great Soul,” while following him only a small part of the way to the social transformation he envisioned. The man himself emerges as one of history’s most remarkable self-creations, a prosperous lawyer who became an ascetic in a loincloth wholly dedicated to political and social action. Lelyveld leads us step-by-step through the heroic—and tragic—last months of this selfless leader’s long campaign when his nonviolent efforts culminated in the partition of India, the creation of Pakistan, and a bloodbath of ethnic cleansing that ended only with his own assassination. India and its politicians were ready to place Gandhi on a pedestal as “Father of the Nation” but were less inclined to embrace his teachings. Muslim support, crucial in his rise to leadership, soon waned, and the oppressed untouchables—for whom Gandhi spoke to Hindus as a whole—produced their own leaders. Here is a vital, brilliant reconsideration of Gandhi’s extraordinary struggles on two continents, of his fierce but, finally, unfulfilled hopes, and of his ever-evolving legacy, which more than six decades after his death still ensures his place as India’s social conscience—and not just India’s..
